Deciding between brown and black mascara? Brown is an option for a softer look; black creates a stronger contrast. Neither is reserved for a particular eye colour, skin tone or age. The best choice is the effect you like seeing in the mirror.
Choose the effect first
| Your aim | Shade to try | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Softly defined lashes | Warm Brown | One coat, then a second only where needed. |
| A stronger lash line | Deep Black | Focus on the roots, then sweep to the tips. |
| Colour on the eyelids | Brown or black | Brown for a softer combination; black for more contrast. |
Brown: definition with a softer feel
Care Mascara 002 Warm Brown is an alternative to black when you want subtle or warm-toned makeup. It can look less contrasting on naturally light lashes. On dark lashes, the difference may be subtler: look at the result in daylight.
A softer colour does not mean an unmade-up look. Brown still defines the lashes. The amount of product and the number of coats also determine the finish.
Black: a more pronounced definition
Care Mascara 001 Deep Black suits a more defined eye look. A fine coat can stay understated; extra coats give it more presence. It need not be saved for evenings.
With a coloured eye pencil, black keeps the lash line prominent. With light complexion makeup and subtle lips, it can also be the face's only strong accent.
What the colour does not tell you
Brown does not automatically mean better tolerance or longer wear. Both Eclo Care Mascaras have a precise brush that separates and coats lashes, a long-wearing formula, and removal with warm water. Their product pages state that they are suitable for sensitive eyes; individual tolerance varies.
Apply from the roots to the tips and adjust the number of coats. For removal and storage, follow the product instructions.
Complete mascara, refill or kit?
Trying the product for the first time? Choose a complete mascara. Already using Eclo's refillable format? Make sure you choose the matching brown refill or black refill.
The Warm Brown kit and Deep Black kit each contain one complete mascara and one refill in the same shade, not two complete mascaras. Current prices and availability are shown on each product page.
A couple of remaining questions
Can brown mascara work with brown eyes?
Yes. There is no rule that mascara must contrast with your iris colour. Choose the contrast you want with your lashes and the rest of your makeup.
Do you need black mascara for an intense look?
Black is an obvious option for contrast, but the pencil line, application and amount of mascara all contribute.
