Black for definition, brown for a softer line, plum or green to introduce colour. That is a starting point for choosing an eye pencil. Then consider the thickness of the line, how much you blend it, and which mascara you pair with it.
Your eye colour can inspire you without limiting your palette. You might enjoy a bold contrast one day and barely-there makeup the next.
Four shades to explore
| Eclo shade | Try it for | Pairing to explore |
|---|---|---|
| 001 Noir Profond | A well-defined lash line | Black mascara, or brown to soften the whole look |
| 002 Marron Chaud | A warmer, softer line | Brown mascara |
| 004 Prune Velours | A touch of plum-purple | Black mascara for contrast, brown for softness |
| 005 Vert Pin | A colourful alternative to a dark line | Light complexion makeup to let the eyes take focus |
Black and brown: start with contrast
Eye Pencil 001 Noir Profond is an option for a visible line. A fine stroke along the lash line already defines the eyes; a large eyeliner wing is not essential.
Eye Pencil 002 Marron Chaud offers a warmer result. Start with short strokes close to the lashes, then join them. Leave the line defined or blend it slightly.
Plum and green: add colour at your own pace
Eye Pencil 004 Prune Velours adds a plum-purple shade. Its creamy texture works for a precise line or a softer effect. Start at the outer part of the lash line: colour can stay subtle without disappearing.
Eye Pencil 005 Vert Pin offers another route. The rest of your makeup does not need to match the green. Light complexion makeup and understated lips can give it room.
For one way to wear plum, see our Prune Summer Look. Treat it as inspiration, not a rule to copy exactly.
The technique matters as much as the shade
The same pencil can create a fine line, a stronger stroke or a blended effect. Start close to the lashes on the outer skin of the eyelid, adding product if needed. Building colour is easier than removing it.
For a soft finish, blend gently after applying. For a defined line, keep a suitable point and work in small strokes. Always follow the product's indicated areas of use and precautions.
Which mascara goes with it?
Brown can continue a softer harmony; black can give lashes greater presence. Neither is mandatory with a plum or green pencil. Our brown or black mascara guide helps you choose by the effect you want.
Eye pencil or 3-in-1 pencil?
Choose an eye pencil for defining the eyes. The Rose Velvet 3-in-1 Pencil and Rosewood 3-in-1 Pencil are designed for lips, cheeks and eyelids. Colour alone does not tell you where a product can be used: check its product page before applying it to another area.
Still unsure? Start with the shade you would enjoy wearing tomorrow, rather than one a colour rule tells you to wear.
