In brief. The dermis is a connective tissue rich in extracellular matrix: an organized network of collagens, elastin, proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including hyaluronic acid. These components do not have the same role: collagens contribute mainly to mechanical strength, elastin to elastic recoil, and GAGs/proteoglycans to the organization of a highly hydrated matrix. This architecture helps explain skin supplements without making the false shortcut “molecule swallowed = molecule deposited intact in the dermis”.

Evidence level for this page: physiology and mechanisms documented in scientific reviews, supplemented by the European regulatory framework where a nutritional claim is cited. This page is not a clinical study of an Eclo product.

Where is the extracellular matrix in the skin?

The skin contains several compartments. The more superficial epidermis contributes notably to barrier function. Beneath it, the dermis contains abundant extracellular matrix, continuously produced and remodeled by tissue cells, including fibroblasts.

This matrix is not inert “filler”. Its composition, architecture and interactions with cells contribute to the tissue’s mechanical and water-related properties. They change with intrinsic ageing, UV exposure and other biological or environmental factors.

Is collagen the whole dermis?

No. Collagen is quantitatively major in adult dermis, but the tissue depends on a broader set of fibres, macromolecules and cells. Reducing the dermis to collagen gives an incomplete picture of its biology.

With age, publications describe changes in the quantity, organization and remodeling of collagens, as well as changes in other matrix components. These phenomena are multifactorial. They are not necessarily corrected by orally “replacing” one constituent.

What are GAGs?

Glycosaminoglycans are long carbohydrate chains present in the extracellular matrix. Hyaluronic acid belongs to this family and is notable for being non-sulfated. Through its strong affinity for water and interactions within tissue, it contributes to the matrix’s water-related and viscoelastic properties.

Saying that hyaluronic acid “retains water” is a useful simplification. It does not mean that an ingested amount ends up intact, gram for gram, in the skin.

What happens to an active ingredient taken orally?

Oral supplementation begins in the digestive tract. Depending on the ingredient, molecules may be hydrolyzed, transformed, absorbed in different forms and metabolized before any potential systemic effect. The exact fate varies by active.

For collagen, hyaluronic acid or a matrix such as eggshell membrane, the right question is therefore not simply “is this component found in the skin?”, but “has this exact ingredient, at this dose, been evaluated in humans on relevant skin endpoints?”

A compositional similarity to the extracellular matrix may be useful for describing a raw material. On its own, it is not proof that the ingredient “rebuilds”, “replaces” or “regenerates” the dermis.

How does this biology relate to Eclo supplements?

These are different levels of evidence: raw-material composition, clinical study on an ingredient and authorized nutritional claim. They should not be merged into a single promise about a finished formula.

How does Eclo classify the level of evidence?

  • Authorized regulatory claim: an EU-authorized nutritional function, subject to conditions of use.
  • Published study on the ingredient: an identifiable scientific article on the relevant ingredient, in a defined dose and population.
  • Proprietary study on the ingredient: data supplied by the raw-material manufacturer; useful, but presented as such.
  • Mechanism / preclinical data: data explaining a biological hypothesis without, by themselves, proving a human benefit.
  • Study on the finished Eclo product: only if the final product itself has actually been studied.

What we know — and what it does not allow us to conclude

  • Documented: the dermis is rich in extracellular matrix containing collagens, elastin, proteoglycans and GAGs.
  • Documented: hyaluronic acid contributes to the hydrated environment of this matrix.
  • Documented: organization of the skin matrix changes with age and environmental exposure.
  • Do not extrapolate: the presence of a constituent in an oral raw material does not mean it is deposited intact in the dermis.
  • Do not extrapolate: terms such as “biomimetic” or “similar to the matrix” are not clinical demonstrations of efficacy.

Frequently asked questions

Does swallowed collagen go directly to the skin?

No. Ingested constituents undergo digestion, absorption and metabolism. Clinical trials must assess the effects of an oral ingredient; the natural presence of collagen in the dermis is not enough to predict those effects.

Do hyaluronic acid and collagen have the same role?

No. Collagen is a structural fibrous protein; hyaluronic acid is a highly hydrophilic GAG. They coexist in the matrix but are not interchangeable.

Does an ingredient “similar to the dermis” rebuild the dermis?

Not on that basis alone. A compositional resemblance describes the raw material; only an appropriate human study can document a clinical effect.

Are the extracellular matrix and the skin barrier the same thing?

No. The extracellular matrix described here mainly concerns the dermis. Barrier function is carried mainly by the stratum corneum of the epidermis.
