Magnesium used to have a fairly simple label.
Then we started learning its second name: citrate, oxide, malate, bisglycinate.
Today it is almost difficult to buy magnesium without one form being presented as “the best absorbed”.
Is bisglycinate genuinely superior?
The most useful answer is: it is a good formulation form, but the universal ranking is much less robust than the marketing suggests.
Bisglycinate means “chelated to glycine”
In a bisglycinate, the magnesium ion is associated with two glycine molecules.
This structure belongs to the family of chelates.
It can alter how the mineral behaves in the gastrointestinal tract, including its solubility and tolerability.
But two pieces of information need to be separated immediately:
How the magnesium is bound and formulated.
The actual amount of magnesium supplied by the serving.
A large amount of “magnesium bisglycinate” on a label is therefore not the amount of elemental magnesium.
The first trap is simply mathematical
In Ressource™, we use 562.5 mg of TRAACS® magnesium bisglycinate from Albion® Minerals.
This material provides 56.25 mg of elemental magnesium, equal to 15% of the nutrient reference value.
If we wrote only “562.5 mg of bisglycinate”, the number would be technically true and nutritionally rather misleading.
The important line when comparing products therefore remains: how much elemental magnesium per daily dose?
Never compare 500 mg of bisglycinate with 300 mg of citrate without checking how much elemental magnesium each one actually provides.
What do we really know about the bioavailability of different forms?
Magnesium forms do not all behave in the same way.
Older trials have shown, for example, that citrate can be more bioavailable than oxide under certain conditions.
For bisglycinate, the comparative evidence in healthy adults is less extensive than the form’s reputation sometimes suggests.
There are studies on chelates, different populations and different markers. But there is no large definitive trial that allows every form to be ranked in order.
“Better absorbed” still does not mean “more effective”
Imagine two forms at the same dose producing different absorption profiles.
That is interesting information.
To say one improves sleep, fatigue or muscle function more, you then need to measure that clinical outcome.
Here again is our favourite rule: bioavailability tells you about the journey, not necessarily the final benefit.
The 2025 sleep trial is a good reading exercise
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial studied 155 adults reporting poor sleep quality.
For four weeks, they received 250 mg per day of elemental magnesium as bisglycinate.
The active group showed a statistically greater improvement in insomnia score, but the difference was small.
The authors themselves emphasised the modest size of the effect.
It is useful human evidence on this form.
It is not proof that every product containing bisglycinate improves sleep.
Why this study does not prove Ressource™
Because the dose is not the same.
The trial used 250 mg of elemental magnesium per day.
Ressource™ provides 56.25 mg.
That is roughly four times less.
And Ressource™ is a multi-active formula designed around hydration and the skin barrier, not a sleep product studied at 250 mg of magnesium.
The form is related. The product, dose and clinical objective are not.
So why choose TRAACS® Albion®?
A proprietary supplier can add value beyond a promise of “better absorption”: precise material identity, specifications, chelate control, traceability and technical documentation.
Those are formulation reasons we find valuable.
We do not need to add a universal clinical superiority that the evidence does not demonstrate.
The dose is often more important than the prestige of the name
Magnesium has authorised health claims in Europe, but their use depends on meeting the regulatory conditions applicable to the product.
The daily dose of Ressource™ provides 56.25 mg of elemental magnesium, or 15% of the NRV.
That figure describes the product’s contribution. On its own, it does not allow results from a clinical trial at another dose to be extrapolated.
And it certainly does not turn 56.25 mg into a dose equivalent to the 250 mg used in the sleep trial.
Our checklist for choosing magnesium
The verdict
Bisglycinate is a serious and interesting form.
We chose it ourselves.
But we see no good reason to turn it into the universal champion of magnesium.
Its real strength may be more understated: a well-characterised form that fits into a coherent formula, with a dose that needs to remain perfectly transparent.
With minerals, the most important word is not always the one written after “form”. It is often the number written after “elemental”.
