- CoQ10 genuinely plays a central role in the mitochondrial respiratory chain and ATP production.
- That does not mean swallowing CoQ10 automatically gives you “more energy”. Cellular mechanism, blood concentration and perceived fatigue are three different levels of evidence.
- Oral data on skin do exist but remain limited, and the main trial used 50 or 150 mg of a patented form, not the 30 mg of generic CoQ10 found in Régénère™.
Some molecules are lucky enough to have an excellent marketing CV.
CoQ10 ticks almost every box: mitochondria, ATP, antioxidant, cellular energy.
It is easy to see how we arrive at the phrase: “a capsule that recharges your cells”.
The starting mechanism is real.
The conclusion, however, moves far too quickly.
Yes, CoQ10 really is at the heart of mitochondria
Coenzyme Q10, or ubiquinone, participates in the electron transport chain in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
This chain contributes to the production of ATP, the main energy currency used by cells.
CoQ10 also exists in a reduced form, ubiquinol, and participates in redox mechanisms.
So far, the “cellular energy” story has a perfectly real biochemical basis.
The fact that a molecule participates in ATP production does not demonstrate that taking more of it improves perceived energy in someone who is not deficient.
The mechanism does not yet answer the clinical question
To know whether supplementation changes fatigue, performance or another concrete outcome, we need trials that measure that outcome.
This is where the subject becomes much more context-dependent.
Age, health condition, baseline status, the form used, dose and duration can all alter the results.
A positive study in a particular clinical population does not automatically become an “energy” promise for every healthy person.
In Europe, CoQ10 cannot be turned into an “energy” health claim
EFSA has assessed several proposed health claims for CoQ10 and did not establish a cause-and-effect relationship that would support their authorisation.
No authorised health claim in the European Union therefore allows CoQ10 to be presented as contributing to energy-yielding metabolism.
That is an important boundary for a brand: we can explain the molecule’s biochemistry in educational content. We must not turn that mechanism into an authorised health benefit for the product.
What about skin? There is one interesting oral trial
In 2017, Žmitek and colleagues published a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 33 adults.
For twelve weeks, participants received a patented water-soluble form of CoQ10 at 50 mg or 150 mg per day.
The researchers reported improvements in certain wrinkle and skin-smoothness scores.
However, they did not observe a significant effect on hydration or dermal thickness.
Small sample, proprietary material, two precise doses: interesting data, not a licence to generalise.
Some skin parameters changed over 12 weeks.
Nor that CoQ10 “gives energy” to users.
Ubiquinone or ubiquinol: does the form change everything?
Ubiquinone is the oxidised form, ubiquinol the reduced form.
Pharmacokinetic studies show that formulation and delivery vehicle can strongly alter blood concentrations after ingestion.
For example, a 2020 crossover trial in older adults observed substantial differences between several formulations.
But “more CoQ10 in the blood” still does not automatically mean “more clinical benefit”.
Bioavailability answers the question of the journey. Efficacy answers the question of the outcome.
Why is CoQ10 still interesting in formulation?
Because it has a clear biological function, a genuine research literature and interesting formulation questions.
But its relevance needs to remain proportionate to the available evidence.
In a multi-active formula, CoQ10 can be chosen as a coherent component without making it carry the entire product promise.
At Eclo: 30 mg in Régénère™, and no “energy” shortcut
Régénère™ contains 30 mg of CoQ10.
This dose is lower than the 50 and 150 mg used in the oral skin trial cited above, and the material is not the same patented water-soluble form.
We therefore do not present that trial as clinical evidence for Régénère™.
And we do not turn CoQ10’s mitochondrial role into a promise that the product “recharges cellular energy”.
It is part of a formula architecture. That is interesting enough without asking it to behave like a rechargeable battery.
Five questions to ask when you see a CoQ10 claim
“Participates in ATP production” is a biochemistry statement. “Will give you more energy” is a clinical promise. Between the two, you need data.
CoQ10 has a place, not a superpower.
