ExceptionHYAL® Star: oral hyaluronic acid 200 mg and clinical study
In brief. ExceptionHYAL® Star is a “full-spectrum” oral hyaluronic acid produced through biofermentation and developed by ROELMI HPC. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2021 in the European Journal of Dermatology evaluated 200 mg/day for 28 days in 60 women with mild to moderate signs of skin ageing. Eclo evidence rating: a published human trial on the ingredient at the same dose used by Eclo; it is not a study of Eclo’s finished products.

Why does the identity of the raw material matter?
“Hyaluronic acid” on its own does not fully describe a raw material. Source, process, purity and molecular-weight distribution can differ. The 2021 trial specifically studied a full-spectrum hyaluronan identified as ExceptionHYAL® Star. That match makes the study more directly relevant to a product using the same raw material at the same dose.
What exactly did the 2021 trial show?
Sixty women with mild to moderate signs of skin ageing were randomized to receive 200 mg/day of ExceptionHYAL® Star or placebo for 28 days.
The PubMed abstract reports statistically significant improvements in the dermatological parameters evaluated in the active group, including +10.6% hydration, −18.8% wrinkle depth, −17.6% wrinkle volume and a reported +5.1% increase in elasticity/firmness.
These values describe this exact protocol: this raw material, 200 mg/day, 28 days and this population. They are not an individual promise.
Why is this study design informative?
Randomization, double blinding and a placebo reduce several important sources of bias. The study is still relatively small and short. It therefore provides a relevant controlled human signal on the ingredient, not universal proof for every oral hyaluronic acid.
What do we know about funding and affiliations?
The PubMed record identifies the authors as affiliated with Complife Italia, a testing laboratory. The PubMed abstract alone does not fully document funding and all conflicts of interest. Eclo therefore does not assume economic independence where the summarized source does not explicitly establish it.
What the study does not allow us to conclude
- It does not demonstrate that all oral hyaluronic acids produce the same results.
- It does not establish a minimum effective dose: it tests 200 mg/day.
- It does not show that a higher dose would provide greater benefit.
- Its results cannot be transferred to a topical serum or an injectable.
- It is not a study of Eclo’s finished formulas.
Oral, topical and injectable: three different evidence bases
A topical is applied to the skin surface; a supplement is ingested, digested and metabolized; an injectable is deposited directly into tissue. Sharing the name “hyaluronic acid” does not make their data interchangeable.
Why does Eclo use 200 mg?
Because 200 mg/day is the dose used in the published ExceptionHYAL® Star trial. It is a traceable formulation benchmark. The accurate wording is studied dose, not “minimum effective dose”.
