- Swallowed collagen does not arrive intact in the skin. It is digested into amino acids and small peptides.
- Some collagen-derived peptides are found in the blood after ingestion. That is an interesting biological clue, not proof that they go directly to “fill” a wrinkle.
- Human trials show favourable signals for some skin parameters, but study quality, the material used and funding matter a great deal.
Collagen has a small storytelling problem.
To make it easy to sell, we would almost need to imagine that we swallow it, it travels through the body and neatly slots into the skin wherever it is missing.
That is not what happens.
But the opposite shortcut, “it is digested so it is useless”, is not much better.
The real story sits somewhere between the two. And it is considerably more interesting.
First, your digestive system does its job
Collagen is a protein. Like other dietary proteins, it is broken down during digestion.
Some of it becomes amino acids. Some can be absorbed as small peptides.
So no, a collagen fibre does not leave your capsule and slide intact into your cheek.
However, human studies have detected peptides containing hydroxyproline in the blood after ingestion of collagen hydrolysates.
Collagen is digested, but “digested” does not mean “made biologically uninteresting”. The question becomes: what do the absorbed amino acids and peptides do next?
Circulating peptides are a clue, not a promise
In 2005, Iwai and colleagues identified several collagen-derived peptides in the blood of volunteers after ingestion of gelatin hydrolysates.
That makes it plausible that some fragments could participate in biological signalling, in addition to providing amino acids.
But the levels need to stay separate:
Jumping straight from step 1 to “firmer skin” is exactly the kind of leap we try to avoid.
And in humans, what do the trials show?
Several randomised trials have reported favourable differences in elasticity, hydration or certain wrinkle parameters with collagen peptides.
In 2014, for example, a controlled trial observed improved elasticity with specific peptides over eight weeks.
In 2023, a meta-analysis of 26 randomised trials, representing 1,721 participants, found improvements in hydration and elasticity in the overall analysis.
At this point, we could write “collagen works” and close the laptop.
That would be a shame, because a 2025 publication adds an important nuance.
The less comfortable part of the evidence
The meta-analysis by Myung and Park included 23 randomised trials and 1,474 participants.
The overall analysis also found improvements in several skin parameters.
But when the authors isolated certain study subgroups, including studies not funded by industry or judged to be of higher methodological quality, the benefits were no longer as clear.
This result does not allow us to say that “collagen does not work”.
It says something more useful: the signal exists, but confidence depends greatly on the quality of the evidence base you are looking at.
And above all, “collagen” does not describe a product
Marine, bovine, eggshell membrane, hydrolysate, peptide profile, dose, duration: two supplements can carry the same word on the front and be very different.
A 5 g study on a specific hydrolysate is not automatically a study of 300 mg of a different matrix.
At Eclo, this matters particularly because our Collagen formula uses Reggenerate™, a material made from upcycled eggshell membrane, not a conventional marine hydrolysate.
The membrane is a naturally complex matrix that contains collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid and glycosaminoglycans, among other components.
We therefore do not present studies on marine or bovine hydrolysates, or on other proprietary membranes, as studies of Reggenerate™.
They help us understand the category. They do not replace data specific to the material used.
Why add vitamin C?
In our Collagen formula, Reggenerate™ is combined with 60 mg of Quali®-C vitamin C.
The rationale is simple and well established from a regulatory perspective: vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, when the conditions of use for the claim are met.
That is not the same as saying vitamin C “makes collagen absorb better” or automatically creates clinical synergy.
A vocabulary detail, perhaps. But one that prevents a coherent formula from turning into a biochemical fairy tale.
So, should you take collagen?
There is no universal answer.
If your objective is skin, there is enough human data to take the subject seriously.
But we would always look at five things before the big word “collagen” on the packaging:
Collagen does not need to go directly to the skin to be interesting. It simply needs to be described the way the body actually handles it.
A different material deserves a different reading.
